Holloware Stamping

The Britannia Metal industry's introduction to Sheffield was attributed to James Vickers in the 1760s. The metal was similar to pewter but easier to stamp and could be polished to a silver sheen. Sheffield became a centre for its manufacture and shipped goods all over Britain and exported goods to Europe and America.

What is Holloware Stamping?

We take dies from our store to make an item, it may be a candlestick or tray or a presentation salver. The metal is cut to a pre workable size then put under the hammer as 350 tonnes plus will be stamped down onto the metal to create the correct shape with the definition required. We also make knife handles this way.

How does it work?

You can not just hit metal in one go to make an object it needs several drafting’s to be brought to the required depth and shape, between each drafting the metal is annealed to ensure the metal doesn’t split.
