A Silversmith’s View
A Silversmith’s View
While moving one of our offices, we came across a true gem: "A Silversmith's View" by former craftsman Iain "Jake" Wade; who dedicated many years of his life to British Silverware before his retirement.
Jake's reflections provide a powerful insight into the dedication required to master this historic trade:
➡️ The Path to Mastery: Training to become a silversmith involves a rigorous five-year apprenticeship, beginning at the age of 16.
➡️ Skill & Versatility: A true craftsman had to master everything from metal types and solders to complex hand-raising and hammering techniques.
➡️ The Scale of Craft: By the end of their training, a silversmith possessed the knowledge to create anything from a delicate napkin ring to a grand carving trolley.
Jake's words serve as a poignant reminder of our responsibility to the future. He stated that "it would be a tragedy if the skills of our trade were to be allowed to die" due to a lack of new apprentices.
At British Silverware, we remain committed to honouring the legacy of craftsmen like Jake by ensuring these essential skills continue to thrive in Sheffield and beyond.
